Mrs. Joe

Mrs. Joe is very controlling character that seems to take a certain level of enjoyment from hitting and demoralizing her subjects. We see her in many cases attacking others, both physically and verbally, without holding back at all. In the particular quote, we see Mrs. Joe hitting Joe around. Her controlling personality is hard to miss looking at her actions-she is extremely controlling over Joe and takes her time with her actions. In the quote, she "..knocked his head for a little while against the wall". She didn't just knock his head and walk away, she continuously did so. Mrs. Joe doesn't have the occasional mood swing rather she seems to always be unhappy and aggressive, ready to hit anything that moves or gets in her way. Without a doubt, Mrs. Joe takes great pleasure from attacking her subjects and shows no sense of control much of the time.

    Evan, you state some truth in this by saying Mrs. Joe is a hostile charachter, but I'd disagree with you when you say she takes enjoyment out of her own hostility. Mrs. Joe only shows her hostility when she's either feeling a lack of control or power, she only takes tickler out when pip disobeys her, she only beats them when they're brushing her off.

    Mrs. Joe is definatly very hostel towards Joe and Pip, but she doesn't get enjoyment out of it. She does it to disipline and to gain control. Joe and Pip may see it as her enjoyment, but she's not that evil. She's short tempered and harsh, but only when Pip or Joe disobey her, or does somthing she doesn't like.

    I disagree with what you said because i think that Mrs. Joe gets a different excitment out of this rather than beating up people for fun. I believe that she does this so that she can show people how much respect she should get when people do stuff wrong. Although she may be short tempered and harsh she is defiantly not doing it for enjoyment she is doing to to show them what they did wrong, and how they should not do what they did next time.
